Onboarding I-9 process

The federal I-9 has a hard, non-negotiable deadline. This is the workflow that hits it every time, including for remote hires.

Updated June 15, 2026

The deadline

Section 2 of the I-9 must be complete within three business days of the employee’s first day of paid work. The clock starts on day one of paid work — not the offer date, not the acceptance date.

Who owns what

  • Section 1 — the employee completes it, no later than their first day.
  • Section 2 — you (or your delegate) complete it within 3 business days, by physically examining the employee’s documents.

The remote-hire path

For remote hires, Creighton uses an authorized representative to examine documents in person. Arrange this before the start date — it’s the step most likely to blow the deadline.

Acceptable documents

The employee chooses what to present: one document from List A, or one from List B plus one from List C. You may not tell them which to bring.
